After his conversation with Themba, Lucian found himself in the observatory, taking some time to think things through. As he experimented with the telescope, focusing it in on distant objects, his thoughts kept on returning to his conversation with Serah about Emma.

He kept telling himself it was nothing, that she would get over it in time. That any addressing of the issue was just bound to make things worse.

But this issue could be one of his splinters. Something small and seemingly inconsequential was getting in the way.

“Everything all right, lad?”

Lucian jumped and turned to see Jagar watching him.

“Yeah, everything’s fine. Sorry, didn’t hear you.”

“I can be quiet, but you were pretty focused. Find anything interesting?”

Lucian shook his head, stepping away from the telescope. “Not really. Just . . . trying to think, I guess.”

“Good place to think. There’s something calming about stargazing. Makes it easy to forget your troubles.”

“Something like that.”

He almost left Jagar there, but remembering Themba’s words, he stopped himself.

“Jagar, I need your advice on something.”

Jagar’s sandy eyebrows arched. “Oh? What’s that?”

Lucian gave him a summary of his conversation with Themba and what he had learned.

Once finished, Jagar watched him curiously. “So, you’re wanting to unlock your magic more by removing these splinters, as Themba called them?”

Lucian nodded. “To be honest, there’s something that’s become something of a sticking point.”

“Girl trouble?”

Lucian looked at him strangely. “I guess you could say that.”

“Well, if I can help, I’ll try.”

“It’s Serah. And Emma too, I guess.”

Jagar’s expression darkened. “Don’t tell me you’ve gotten mixed up with both of them. I’ll box your ears, boy.”

“No, nothing like that. I feel like I’ve given Serah the wrong idea. She’s worried I have feelings for Emma because of what happened.”

“You mean when you saved her?”

Lucian nodded. “Yeah. It’s this specter that looms up every now and again. I want to reassure her. I just don’t know how to make her see it.”

Jagar took a moment to digest Lucian’s words. “I can understand Serah’s perspective. In her position, I’d probably wonder, too.”

“Serah’s my person, Jagar. I have no doubts about that.”

“It’s natural for other emotions to get mixed in now and again. Life is complicated and messy.”

Lucian was quiet for a moment. “I guess you can say that. If you held a gun to my head, then yeah. Sometimes, old feelings get mixed in I’d rather not have. I just don’t know how to make sense of them. Emma was my past and was there for me during a tough transition in my life. She was my first friend, I guess you could say, once I found out I was a mage. Serah was there for me on Psyche, and every day after that. She’s watched me grow, has been there to catch me when I fell. We’ve been together almost every step of the way.”

“Well, lad, that’s some heavy stuff. I’ll say this much. The heart isn’t logical. It feels what it feels. Anyone with a heart will tell you that.”

“What do I do, then? How can I prove to Serah that she’s the one for me? Nothing I’m saying is working.
